Simplifying and solving

Back in 2012, working for a market-leading agri-tech business, Ewen Wardman was hard at work installing large-scale RFID systems for livestock farmers in China. As he toured the farms, Ewen spotted a problem. Farmers were taking photos on their smartphones of their animals’ ear tags, printing off the images and attaching these to paper records. Ewen began to revolve ideas around a digital notebook that could integrate data and images to save time and simplify the process.

This idea developed into a single platform system that could capture all the data needed to usefully monitor cattle and sheep quickly and easily on something we all carry in our pockets. 

Windswept in Perthshire

Ewen, together with school friend Jamie Pugh, established Duradiamond Software Ltd and began providing IT and software consultancy based around practical on-farm technology. Over the following years, during many evenings slaving over laptops and windswept weekends working on farms, they identified and refined how iLivestock would capture data on breeding, medicine, insurance, movement, sale and slaughter, including challenging times during lambing and calving, 24 hours before an inspection, dealing with environmental threats or making breeding decisions. 

Award-winning and international

Winning a 2022 AgriScot Innovation Award and a 2023 Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland Technical Innovation Silver Award, in 2025 we were delighted to be awarded an international FIGAN Award for outstanding contribution to technological innovation. Today, farms around the world are using our technology and equipment to monitor many millions of animals.
